N.A. Moore family papers, 1837-1929.

Primarily correspondence among members of the Moore family of Kensington, Connecticut, and the Pickett family of Morris, Connecticut. A substantial number of letters were written by Nelson A. Moore, a noted photographer and water color artist who painted landscapes and portraits. He wrote to his wife and children and discussed his health, his painting, his ability to sell his art and his bad luck with sales, his studio in New York City, his summers at Lake George, New York, his lack of money, and his son Edwin's dog and cow pictures. Of note is one letter in which he boasts of buying a substitute to serve in the army for him during the Civil War, and a second letter from Emma Willard thanking him for a painting. In 1886, Nelson spent the summer in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, visiting a fellow artist. Edwin Augustus joined his father in New York in the 1880s and took classes at the National Academy of Design. Daughter Ellen Maria was also an artist, based in Maine. A significant number of letters were written by Julia Pickett Bartlett to her sister Ann Maria Pickett Moore, Other family members whose letters are part of the collection are Ellen E. Moore, Ethelbert Allen Moore, Martha Hart Moore, and Alanson Jasper Pickett Moore. Alanson J. Pickett, a farmer, is also represented in the collection by a series of more than 20 diaries.
